Areas of Impact
MDI is a manufacturing organization that provides standard and custom packaging solutions, production and fulfillment services, and environmental services for business customers. The organization has operated a successful non-profit social enterprise for over 50 years, providing meaningful job opportunities for individuals with disabilities in an integrated and inclusive business setting, both at MDI and in the community. MDI operates in the four communities of Grand Rapids, Hibbing, Deer River and the Twin Cities.
What We Bring To The Table
MDI manufactures corrugated plastic products; a wide variety of totes, trays and boxes used by distribution and warehouse centers, retail, manufacturing and agriculture businesses all over the country. We also focus on production and fulfillment services such as kitting, assembly and contract packaging. In northern Minnesota we offer environmental services including office and facility cleaning, outdoor maintenance and commercial and resident recycling.
Social enterprise is a popular term heard these days in business schools and the nonprofit world. What does it mean? How does it work? Wikipedia defines social enterprise as “the attempt to draw upon business techniques to find solutions to social problems.”
It’s been happening at MDI for 51 years. At MDI you’ll find a mix of people with disabilities and those without, all given a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work. For many of our employees, if it weren’t for MDI, they wouldn’t have other job opportunities. MDI helps create self-sufficiency through meaningful work in an inclusive business environment.
