Bio

Jan Cohen has been a consultant and trainer working with nonprofit organizations for more than 20 years. Her focus is customized worksessions and consulting services for nonprofit organizations throughout the country for diversification of revenue, earned income, social enterprise planning, marketing planning, and strategic planning processes. Jan partners with Academies for Social Entrepreneurship as the trainer & coach having worked with over 75 participating agencies in customized Social Enterprise Academies. She also serves in Interim Executive positions in organizations with an earned income focus and business ventures that are social enterprises, during periods of transition in leadership. In addition to having worked with over 150 organizations in her own training and consulting business, Ms. Cohen was the Director of New Business Ventures at HOPE Services for 3 years, an affiliate consultant with CompassPoint Nonprofit Services in the Bay Area for 6 years, a senior consultant with the National Center for Social Entrepreneurs for 5 years, and Chief Executive Officer of Project HIRED, a nonprofit employment service serving individuals with disabilities, for 10 years. Under her leadership, Project HIRED grew from a staff of 2 and budget of $50,000 to a staff of 15 and revenues of $ 2.3 million, with 85% self generated from businesses and services, a working relationship with over 850 participating employers, and more than 2000 placements of disabled persons.

Ms. Cohen, who is a founding Board member of the SEA SF Bay Chapter, serves on the Boards of local, regional, and national nonprofit organizations, especially those with social enterprises. She also serves on the Board of California Association for Nonprofits Insurance Services, a for profit subsidiary of CAL Nonprofits.
