Overview of Organization

HopeWorks is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which helps low-income, Snohomish County residents, achieve self-sufficiency through social enterprises that provide training and pathways to living-wage jobs. In particular, HopeWorks targets individuals who now have a stable, affordable place to live through housing programs created in the County. The HopeWorks model is to establish social enterprise businesses embedded with training and skill building designed to produce income progression opportunities over time. HopeWorks was originally formed as the employment branch of Housing Hope, a 30-year-old non-profit which promotes and provides a continuum of safe, decent, affordable housing and necessary related services to very low income and low income residents of Snohomish County and Camano Island.

Goal of Position

This VISTA position collaborates with the HopeWorks leadership team to develop and grow their existing social enterprises designed to create career pathways for low-income residents (interns) of affordable housing, especially those with experience being homeless. The VISTA Volunteer works in an entrepreneurial environment at HopeWorks Station collaborating with fellow staff members and community resource persons to grow GroundWorks, a landscaping company, ReNewWorks, a furniture consignment store, and CafeWorks, a coffee shop. Development plans will generate both greater margin (business revenue) and mission (interns served) outcomes.

The social enterprise development project will require the VISTA member to participate in developing marketing systems, toolkits including creating marketing collateral, and copywriting. Additionally, they will help further implement our Social Return on Investment reporting. As many of the social enterprises at HopeWorks are in start-up mode, the VISTA will work in a dynamic atmosphere with shifting priorities. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a fluid environment.

The Enterprise Developer VISTA will work to complete these objectives:

MARKETING SYSTEMS: Research and develop systems for tracking customer relations (CRM), online marketing activities, website performance, social media activities, and return on investment (ROI) of marketing activities. With better tracking and knowledge of our ROI in marketing activities, we can build our capacity for attracting customers and thus bring in additional revenue and training opportunities for our formerly homeless clients.

MARKETING TOOLKITS: Develop tool kits for executing the marketing tactics. This includes editorial calendars, templates for collateral, and messaging frameworks. A plan has no use if it cannot be executed on, but with these toolkits our social enterprise managers will be able to expand their abilities to market to their customers and bring in revenue for our training programs and training opportunities for our formerly homeless clients.

SOCIAL RETURN ON INVESTMENT (SROI): Continue the SROI model development, working to incorporate new tracking systems throughout the organization. SROI is a tool for evaluating our use of resources and the impact on the community and clients. Creating a good SROI model and report enables HopeWorks to measure mission impact and improvement for fighting the cycle of poverty, as well as communicating that impact to the community and relevant stakeholders.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Conduct community outreach to expand awareness of HopeWorks and its social enterprises. Great awareness generates business, which in turn allows the intern program to grow enabling HopeWorks to serve more individuals in poverty.

COPYWRITING: Expand HopeWorks copywriting for use in marketing activities. Utilizing our existing messaging framework, develop a base of writing copy that can be utilized in marketing materials that help inform the public and clients of HopeWorks services, attract funders, and help our social enterprises attract customers to support our job training. Greater support of our programs will increase our ability to serve more clients in poverty and help our programs become more self-sufficient in funding.
