Foodservice job training social enterprises come in many shapes and sizes.

What does success look like? How do established programs operate sustainably and serve their community through foodservice job training?

This two-day workshop will inspire participants to explore how the world of foodservice job training social enterprise can make transformational impact in their local communities. Walk away with the framework you need to champion this program model or grow your program’s social impact.

Our Foodservice Job Training Programs 101 Workshop provides a great introductory training opportunity for board members, executives, and management new to the foodservice social enterprise model through exposure to a model organization. Each workshop is designed as an up-close learning experience with a host organization providing participants a behind-the-scenes look inside an established program model to understand what makes it successful.

Workshop goals:

  • Understand the first steps to getting your program started
  • Review different social enterprise & program options
  • Learn how to make your program financially sustainable
  • Start to envision a local solution in your community

Get the information you need to envision what a job training program could look like in your community. From operations to social services, fundraising and program structure, we’ll give you a high-level overview to learn about what this training model requires to be successful. Insights into your program design

Foodservice job training social enterprises come in many shapes and sizes. Would a catering program serving the formerly incarcerated be best for your nonprofit, or a contract meals operation for working mothers? We’ll review many different styles of this program model and what tools are needed to make yours a success.

Review different foodservice business models & how to incorporate job training

Learn what kind of business could suit your organization’s structure and needs. For many nonprofits looking to start a job training program, operating businesses is a new concept and can be a scary endeavor without strong business backgrounds on the team. We will discuss the pros & cons of each business line in relation to this training model, including contract meals, catering, restaurant, and a café.

Build your team’s capacity

Discover your team’s capacity to grow and sustain a job training model by discussing the logistics of daily operations and optimal staffing models. It is important to find a healthy balance between business operational goals and the needs of students.

The financial model: balance nonprofit and business demands

This training model is funded through a combination of business revenue and nonprofit fundraising. We will review the financial model and the importance of the double bottom line. Hint: your business does not have to be completely self-funded! Our Catalyst Kitchens team will give you the whole story.

Wraparound Services for Student Success

Wraparound services are vital to a student’s success and include housing, transportation, healthcare, case management, recovery support, and more. This workshop will outline what wraparound services are required and provide strategies to incorporate these services into your program, whether your organization offers them internally or through external partnerships.

Background of this workshop:

This offering was originally designed as part of our consulting service offerings for organizations preparing to launch a job training program. When in the process of launching (or restructuring) a program using this model, it is extremely helpful to visit with organizations that have been successful is running foodservice job training programs. For this reason, we decided to roll out this two-day workshop as an independent product. This workshop is designed to suit many organization types and provides a high-level overview of the job training model embedded in social enterprise business lines. While traditionally offered at FareStart in Seattle, Catalyst Kitchens intends to offer this workshop in various locations to showcase different program structures, business types, and populations served.

About Our Host:

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is a private, nonprofit organization that collects, stores and distributes donated food to more than 550 feeding partners in six Central Florida counties. Last year the food bank distributed nearly 58 million meals to partner programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, senior centers, day care centers and Kids Cafes.

Their culinary job training program serves economically-challenged adults and offers a 16-week culinary training program to set them on the path to economic sustainability. They have a robust school meals operation that provides 10,000 meals per day in the summer to childcare facilities and 6,500 meals served daily during the school year.  Students experience production in their catering and banquet services as well & meal manufacturing that provides diverse training opportunity.
