Eco-Bags Products, Inc. combats plastic waste and promotes sustainable and fair labor business practices through the sale of their reusable grocery bags.
In 1989, Sharon Rowe decided she’d had enough of single-use plastic bags obstructing the beauty of the earth. This was the catalyst for Eco-Bags Products, Inc. which opened for business with two simple goals: to produce responsibly made and sourced bags at great prices and encourage a reusable way of life. Sharon debuted what would become Eco-Bags Products, Inc.’s signature product, the String Bag, at the 1990 New York City Earth Day Celebration. The String Bag is a simple lightweight, expandable cotton net bag once used in Europe long before paper and plastic bags. She sold out in four hours.
Eco-Bags Products, Inc.’s mission is to offer thoughtful, ethically and sustainably sourced, durable-reusable bags that inspire people to reduce, reuse, recycle and re-imagine the world we live in. From the very beginning, their business choices were driven by two age-old sayings: “leave no trace” and “do no harm.” They firmly believe that everyone can make an effort to live lightly on the earth and live more gently with each other. That is why their business practices prioritize clean, sustainable sourcing and fair wage and labor manufacturing.
From the outset, Eco-Bags Products, Inc. has been conscious of their material supply chain. They introduced certified organic cotton in 1996 and recycled cotton in 2004, before there was even a market for them. All of their organic fibers are free of chemicals and synthetic fertilizers and are certified through Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), an internationally recognized certification.
All recycled and conventional fibers are also certified according to fair wage and labor standards like the Social Accountability 8000 (SA-8000), ensuring that not only are the fibers made from what they say they are, but also that those who make them are treated with respect, paid fairly and employed in a safe work environment. Eco-Bags Products, Inc.’s primary production partners in India have always shared their vision of an engaged and sustainable work environment. Employees are given competitive compensation, extended health coverage, retirement benefits, pension plans and vacation time. Sharon travels to India regularly to meet with these partners and, over the past 30 years, has created lifelong relationships.
Today, Eco-Bags Products, Inc. is a certified B Corporation and has been honored as a “Best for the World Company” every year since 2013. Since 1989, they have sold millions of reusable bags, saving millions of plastic bags from entering the wastestream. They believe in their responsibility to be agents of change, and that they can continue to influence culture by responsibly making goods that invite conversation and inspire the change they want to see in the world.
