Humphreys Street Coffee was an initiative born out of a desire to create jobs in their neighborhood. Created in 2008, the enterprise provides mentoring opportunities that empower youth, and train teenagers in job skills such as customer service, marketing and craftsmanship.
The social enterprise, a sector of their parent non-profit Harvest Hands Community Development, is located in Nashville, TN and currently employs 16 high school students per semester in the Napier neighborhood of South Nashville. When a local teen applies for and receives a job at Humphreys Street, they are trained in the skilled crafts of coffee, specialty roasting and making artisan body products. Students are given the opportunity to earn money in a neighborhood where few positive economic opportunities exist, an invaluable asset.
Aside from access to employment, income and the confidence that comes with job training, Humphreys Street employees also have the opportunity to tour colleges and learn about trade school options. Each employee is given the chance to spend time with mentors who guide the youth by sharing their own education, career advice and life experiences. The courses come with financial literacy training, access to resources to open checking and savings accounts and opportunities to earn academic scholarships upon graduation. This helps the students not just provide for the present, but plan for self-sufficient and successful futures.
100% of our profits are reinvested into programs and scholarships that support our students.
In 2017, Humphreys Street expanded their coffee production by offering a new coffee subscription service to their customers! Through this subscription program, customers can receive freshly roasted coffee, straight to their door, as frequently as they’d like. They have subscription options that arrive weekly, twice monthly or monthly. This new year, the coffee shop plans to bring more exciting initiatives to fruition. In early summer 2018, Humphreys Street will be expanding their coffee roasting operations into a brick and mortar coffee shop in the Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood of Nashville.
With this expansion, they will be able to accept more students into their program and provide more hands-on customer service training opportunities. Since sustainable community development is one of their key values, they are extremely grateful to be a part of a supportive and encouraging community such as SEA.
