Women’s Bean Project: Where a Woman Earns Her Future

Women’s Bean Project is a Denver-based social enterprise that employs chronically unemployed and impoverished women in a transitional job in gourmet food and handmade jewelry manufacturing.   By helping these women earn the job readiness, interpersonal and life skills needed to move into career entry-level employment, the Bean Project offers a viable way to address chronic unemployment, recidivism, welfare dependency and a host of other challenges. It ushers women with significant barriers into the economic mainstream, helping them earn a future.

By working in an active business, the women of Women’s Bean Project learn basic job readiness skills – reliability, accuracy, punctuality, attention to detail and attendance; while also addressing life skills – communication, accountability, problem-solving and goal-setting. These skills help graduates go on to lead successful, self-sufficient and fulfilling lives, creating a new future – for themselves, their families, our community and our economy. Women’s Bean Project provides women with learning opportunities, income and the support necessary to transition to full-time permanent employment, setting them on a path to job advancement and self-sufficiency. By helping a woman thrive, the Bean Project is where a woman earns her future. The program’s graduation rate has reached an all-time high of 77% and both job placement and 1-year job retention rate has increased to 100%.

Women’s Bean Project joined SEA in 2004 because it was looking to share knowledge and experiences with other organizations on the tightrope of balancing the business and the mission. The social enterprise model gives Women’s Bean Project a sustainable way to achieve its mission. According to a recently released Mathematica Jobs Study, businesses like Women’s Bean Project have shown that for every dollar spent, the return to society is $2.23.  As studies like this show, Women’s Bean Project is a win-win-win for the women, their families and our society.
